It was less than an hour before Ruth Ebenstein's headstrong 6-year-old was supposed to go to his siddur party, where he would receive his first Jewish prayer book.

 

The ceremony was a rite of passage meant to be experienced with the rest of his first-grade classmates. 

 

But he didn't want to go.
